Position is always important in poker and indeed one of the biggest differences between the amateur poker player and the professional poker player is that the latter will use position as a battering ram whereas the former will just sit down at the table and not really consider position in reference to everything else that might be going on. For this reason, the importance of position in poker as a general theme is something that is quite high, but when you are playing online poker it can very easily be argued that position becomes even more important.

The main reason for this is that there are fewer things at work in online poker. For example, while tells can be hugely important in offline poker, for the most part they are not as reliable as one might think within online poker circles. The same can be said about things like methods of betting simply because you can not see your opponent and for that reason you do not really know for sure if what you saw was a pattern or simply a random occurrence. This is not to say that things like physical and betting tells are nonexistent in online poker, but rather to say that they are less important and less emphasized. With fewer pieces of information coming to you from those corners of the world, the emphasis on the other aspects becomes greater and one of those aspects is of course the importance of position.

Another reason that is worth considering about the importance of position in online poker is the fact that online poker is a lot wilder when it comes to the betting that people tend to do. The anonymity of the internet allows people to make plays that they would never consider in real life and because of that, there are wilder bets that happen at the online poker table. If you are in early position, you need to play tighter at a wilder table because of the fact that entering with a speculative hand could force you into losing the money you put into the pot when someone raises and someone else re-raises behind you, but if you are in later position you already have more information and therefore can make a much better decision even in spite of the raising that happens. This type of behavior emphasizes the importance of position in online poker.

In the end, position has always been an important aspect in online poker and recognizing that fact is key to being successful, but at the same point in time understanding that position is even more important in the online arena is one of the most important things that you could do in order to help facilitate success within the online arena.
