In one form or another, roulette has been played for centuries all over the globe. From its supposed primitive beginnings in 18th century France, to the now multimillion pound industry that takes a prominent place in all major casinos, roulette has long been thought of as a traditional casino game. However, unlike other traditional casino games, roulette relies solely on the players luck as they can have no effect on what the outcome of the spin of the roulette wheel might be. With this in mind and the chance, in essence, to lose all of ones money in one spin, why has roulette stayed as such a popular casino game?
If entering a modern day casino and heading to the roulette tables, there will almost always be two obvious sets of people playing. First of all, a large amount of roulette players are made up of the holiday or weekend players. These players have no game plan or strategy that they stick to and simply place a low stakes bet on either red or black or, for example, their favourite number.
The second group of players that generally accommodate the roulette areas of casinos are those that are playing seriously. They have a set plan in mind and stick to it, placing an array of different bets such as a street or a six line. Regular players, they appear to be winning vast amounts of money by sticking to their strategy.
Unfortunately for those serious roulette players, there is, contrary to popular belief, no strategy or set way to win at roulette.
Roulette is a complete gambling game. Whereas other casino games, such as poker or blackjack, have an aspect of skill to them, for example, in blackjack players need to know when to stick, roulette simply relies on players choosing their numbers or colours and hoping that the roulette ball lands on the appropriate number. In addition, many people have provided formulas that say, in general, to place a bet on the same colour until it comes up, increasing the stake each time. Many believe this to work on a mathematical equation, if a red does not come after 10 spins, chances are it is going to come up on spin number 11. The truth is, there is no logic at all to this as each spin on the roulette table is a 50 50 choice, excluding the 0 option, therefore if black came up 100 times, the next spin of the roulette wheel is still a 50 50 chance of whether the result will be red or black.
This does not make roulette a poor game or a game that is not worth playing. Take a look at bingo or keno. Both similar to roulette in the fact the players have no choice on the outcome and can only choose their numbers, they are both massively popular games across the world. There is an element of luck that people cherish in these types of games. Not always do people want to know that they can win the game and occasionally prefer the excitement value of not being aware of the final outcome.

Since its introduction to the world in the 18th century, when it was played in gambling venues throughout France and other parts of Europe, roulette has grown in popularity almost continuously. Unlike several other casino games, roulette has had a very small amount of changes sine its integration into the gambling world and in the most part, play remains exactly the same as it was over 100 years ago.
Betting in roulette can be very straightforward or extremely complex, as there are possibilities and variations to suit everyones needs. From an easy red or black bet, in which the player decides whether the roulette ball is going to land on a red or black number, to the more complex corner bets, where four individual numbers can be chosen using just one chip, each bet has a different risk factor with a payout to match.
Although many consider roulette to have an aspect of skill to it, it is completely a luck-only game. Casinos around the world have realised that people enjoy taking time out to play a game that requires no skill, unlike Texas Hold Em or blackjack and over the years have introduced a variety of luck based games.
In the United Kingdom and Europe in general, bingo is one of the most popular forms of luck games. The way bingo is played is very straightforward. First, players receive a card that features a variety of numbers from 1 through to 90 and each player can usually have as many cards as they wish. Numbered balls from 1 to 90 are then picked at random from a container and a bingo caller tells the players what the number is. Each player must then mark that number off their card and therefore care must be taken not to be over zealous with the number of bingo cards taken, as it is often difficult to check several cards at once.
To win money on bingo, players must either complete one horizontal line, known as a Line, or once this has been claimed, a full card must be completed, known as having a House.
Across the ocean in America and keno is the luck game of choice in casinos. Originating in China, although the exact time of its introduction varies considerably, keno is played very similarly to bingo. 80 small balls, all labeled with the numbers from 1 to 80, are placed into a bowl and churned to continually mix them up. The main difference between keno and bingo is that unlike bingo, keno players choose the numbers that they believe are going to come up.
Once each player has chosen their numbers, which can be any amount from 1 to 20, the game begins and 20 numbers are drawn at random and placed upon the keno board for all to see. Players then check their cards and receive winnings depending on how much they wagered and how many numbers they matched.
All three games, bingo, keno and roulette, are very easy games to play and get to grips with, making them the perfect introductory games for beginners to the casino world.

Although often seen as an English game due its popularity at home and in the many dedicated halls that were created from the 1950s through to the 1980s, bingo is very much a traditional American game. Since the introduction of the game in the mid 1930s, when it transformed almost overnight from a popular travelling carnival fair game to a worldwide phenomenon, bingo has been massively popular and like most other casino or gambling games, has seen many different variations be created from the original game. The below are just a selection of the many variations that are played the world over.
U Pick Em. Of the many variations that are now standard in a lot of casinos and bingo halls, U Pick Em is one of the most favourable. The game is actually a mixture of both bingo and keno and begins by players deciding which numbers they would like to play with, rather than in standard bingo where the numbers are pre designated on the cards provided. From here on, the game continues as normal, with players marking off any numbers that are chosen by the bingo caller.
Progressive or Bonanza. This variation of bingo is favoured as a side game, mainly due to the length in which it is regularly played. Progressive or bonanza bingo begins by a number of balls, generally around 45, begin drawn by the bingo caller. Cards are then purchased by the players and if anyone has a full house at this time, it should be called and they win the jackpot. If not, another ball is chosen by the bingo caller and the question is asked once again. This process continues until one person has a full house.
The difference between bonanza and standard bingo is that should no one achieve a full house after a ball has been drawn, the jackpot amount increases. In addition, another ball is not necessarily drawn immediately after the next and will be drawn whenever the game states, within the hour, day, week or even month.
Christmas, Birthday or Party. A popular home variation of bingo is one that adds a little extra spice to the game. Known commonly as Christmas Bingo, this variation requires for all players to bring a present to the game, generally to a pre-stipulated sum of money. All of the presents are then placed in the centre of the playing area and play begins as normal. However, as each player marks off a number on their card, they take a present from the centre and place it near to their person. This continues until all of the presents have been removed from the centre. If no one has called bingo at this point, play continues and players begin to steal presents off each other when they mark a number on their card. Once a full house has been called, each player keeps the presents that they have won throughout the game.
There are some variations for the Christmas bingo game itself, most notably that some games allow for players to choose their own numbers, rather than have cards with numbers already stated on them.

Blackjack, also known as 21, is the most popular casino game played around the world. The reason it is so popular is because people believe that it is their best chance of winning at cards. It is a game based on skill and calculations. Most gamblers feel they are able to best them both.
Historians believe the game originated around the 17th century and was eventually brought to the US with little fanfare. It took a little while, but eventually it has turned into what it has today.
Like any casino game, the house has the advantage and blackjack is no different. A lot depends on the circumstances of the game which determine how much of an edge they have. Most houses play with a device that holds the cards before they are dealt to the players.
This contraption is called the shoe. The shoe can hold anywhere from four to eight decks. The more decks in the game, the worse your odds are against the house, or at least the more difficult it is to count cards and give yourself an edge.
The odds in blackjack don’t get terribly worse, but every percentage counts when you are playing with money. If you are playing with four decks the house has a 59% advantage and when it goes up to eight decks their advantage reaches 69%. The great equalizer is if you are an expert at the strategy of blackjack, because then your odds rise dramatically to just a 1% advantage to the house.
Just like any game you gamble on, it’s all about the odds. That’s the only way you will make money because if play against the odds you may win a hand or two, but in the end you will lose all of you money. And that is never any fun and playing the game should be a good time.
At the end of the day, playing blackjack is a form of entertainment. For a select few it can turn into a profession, but that is only after many years of honing their skills and perfecting their strategy.
The most frustrating part of gambling and playing blackjack is that the house usually wins. This means the longer you gamble the more prone you are to lose all your money to the casino.
If you are going to gamble, go into it with the most information you can. This is how you are going to make money, and that makes gambling and playing blackjack all the more fun. Remember never to gamble with more than you can afford to lose.

Online poker is the biggest form of online gambling that currently takes place and it has been since the late 1990s. With the massive online casino boom that began before the millennium, poker blossomed from a game that was played in many different variations in casinos around the world into a multimillion pound industry.
Whilst online poker does now dominate the whole poker scene, there is still an extremely healthy offline poker world.
The popularity of poker can be traced back to March 19 1931 when gambling was officially legalised in the state of Nevada. Initially, venues for playing some form of gambling games were built slowly and it was not until 1946 that dedicated casinos began to be built, when the Flamingo Hotel was opened and began offering an extensive range of gambling games. At the time, Bugsy Siegel, the owner of the Flamingo Hotel, did not realise where his hotel had been built. Over the next few years however, more hotels and casinos began to be erected nearby and soon, this area of Las Vegas was being known as the now famous Strip.
Prior to the legalisation of gambling, it was still possible to play poker and it was actually relatively easy to find a poker game, even though playing for money was illegal. Played in many bars around the country, usually playing Five Card Stud or Five Card Draw, the decade of the 1930s was the start of poker beginning to snowball into the most played card game around.
In the modern day Las Vegas, the Strip is packed full of different casinos offering every variation of poker imaginable. All within a short travelling distance of each other, it is possible to play Omaha Hi Low in the Mirage, then Seven Card Stud in the Bellagio, followed by Five Card Draw in New York New York and finishing with Razz in Caesars Palace.
Of course, not only is poker played in Las Vegas and general casinos around the world, but is it is a massively popular game to play at home.
If friends get together to play cards, almost instinctively the game is assumed to be some variation of poker. In addition, whilst Texas Hold Em may be the number one poker game to play online, it is matched with popularity with Five Card Draw when playing at home. Five Card Draw is very rarely seen in offline casinos, but is a much loved home game, generally due to the ease of playing, unlike Texas Hold Em, there are only two rounds of betting and no real way to read other players, as there are no community cards.
Whilst online poker may be the way forward for many, offline poker is still massively popular and dominates the casinos around the world. Furthermore, it cannot be forgotten that without offline poker, the worlds most famous poker tournament, the World Series of Poker, would not be taking place. The World Series of Poker now allows for players to gain entry to the tournament via online or satellite games, but the main event is still played solely offline, keeping the world of offline poker thriving.
