Widely considered the classic poker game, five card draw poker is a second card game to most experienced and professional pokers. Playing it just as effective as their first choice of poker, the majority of older poker players were brought up playing five card draw poker and played it as a young child, using matchsticks or buttons in place of money.

Five card draw poker is unfortunately not as popular as it once was and has seen a constant fall in popularity in recent years. This has largely been down to most new and young players, amateurs and professionals alike, being taught to play poker with Texas Hold Em, due to its massive increase in popularity continually from the mid 1990s through to the current day.

A quick and simple game, when compared to other poker variants, five card draw poker relies heavily on players reading the moves of others effectively, as there are less rounds in the hand, meaning a reduced time to rectify any mistakes or misjudgments that have been made.

Broken down into four separate areas, the Deal, the first betting round, the Draw and a final betting round, five card draw poker is different from other forms of poker as it has no community cards.

The game starts with the dealer, starting with the player on their left, providing each player with five hole cards. Once all cards have been dealt, they can be picked up and organised. Picking up cards prior to them all being dealt is considered rude and somewhat of a faux pas.

The first betting round takes place and each player has the same options as in any other poker game, bet, check or fold. Within the betting round, a maximum of four raises are allowed.

After all players have actioned in the betting round, the Draw takes place where any remaining players can remove a maximum of three cards from their hands and have them replenished by three new cards from the dealer. In most casinos, any player with an ace in their hand is allowed to take four cards from the dealer.

Further to the Draw, the final round of betting ensues with the same rules as before. Once the betting has completed, all players in the game must show their hands and the player with the highest value hand wins the entire pot.

Five card draw poker is an extremely easy poker game to learn and is full of subtle actions and moves and requires a greater skill than other poker games of being able to read opponents effectively.

Whilst not as popular as it once was in casinos, Texas Hold Em poker provides the greater pay outs due its massive popularity, five card draw poker is still the favored game when playing poker in a home environment and several online casinos offer a variety of five card draw poker tournaments. Further, a large amount of online casinos also provide learning and educational tables in which new players can learn the ropes of the game and be able to play it effectively.

The very first form of stud poker to have been played, five card stud poker is a fantastic card game, quick to learn and easy to play, it is suitable for all ability levels. However, due to the popularity of seven card stud and now Texas Hold Em, it can be difficult to find a standard game of five card stud in a regular casino.

For various reasons, many people have introduced variations of five card stud. Some casinos offer the variations as a way to entice more players to play the game, whilst others look for a twist on a classic poker game and some simply want to increase the difficulty of the game completely, as in a standard five card stud game, players receive one hole card and four face up cards, making it very easy for even amateur players to succeed.

One of the more popular variations of five card stud poker is the Hi Low version. A popular variant of many other poker games and other casino games in general, Hi Low games provide a joint share of the total pot, one half for the highest value card hand on the table and one for the lowest value card hand. Most casinos have set rules about what is counted as a low hand, however generally, most offer the rule of Ace to five, meaning a hand must be within these cards to be counted as a low hand, although some offer Ace to six and occasionally Ace to seven.

Also known as Canadian Stud, Soko is a variant of five card stud poker that was developed in Finland and is still played regularly to this day. There are only subtle differences between Soko and standard five card stud, which are usually the additions of two extra hands in terms of ranking and hand value. As it is unlikely for a player to have a five card flush or straight in traditional five card stud, Soko allows for four card straights and flushes to be accepted. However, they are not ranked similarly, a four card straight is the next highest in value after a pair, whilst a four card flush is ranked above a four card straight and between a two pair.

Mexican Stud or Stud Loco differs quite substantially in the way play is executed from the standard five card stud poker game and is known as a roll your own poker game. Each player starts out with two hole cards, but after the count of three, they have to all turn face-up one card. After each round of betting, which is the same as regular five card stud, each player receives a card and again has to decide which card to turn face up on the count of three. Once all betting has been completed, the table will be the same as a standard five card stud game, with four cards face up and one card face down. Often played with a stripped deck, the Mexican Stud version of the game is one that is often played with friends and can provide fantastic amusement for hours.

Up until recently, seven card stud was the most popular and widely played poker game around the world. Most people who said poker would immediately, or automatically, think of seven card stud poker and it dominated the casino tables for many years. Still popular today, especially in eastern North America, it is only in recent years, with the popularity of Texas Hold Em, that seven card stud has taken somewhat of a backseat in the poker world.

Seven card stud poker is played with any number of players from between two and seven, with each player receiving seven cards throughout the game. The aim of seven card stud is to create the highest value poker hand possible out of the cards each player is given.

To start the game of seven card stud poker, an ante and a bring-in is used. Each player then receives two cards face down and one card face up. A round of betting takes place, followed by another face up card being dealt, another round of betting and a further face up card. An additional round of betting happens, followed by the final face up card. Prior to the last remaining card being dealt, which is dealt face down, a round of betting takes place. A final round of betting is then carried out, prior to what is known as the showdown, where all players show their cards and the winner takes the pot.

The origins of seven card stud poker cannot be dated back to any certain point in time, as it is with most poker games. The time of the American Civil War is generally seen as the period when stud poker began to be a popular and regularly played card game and the forerunner to seven card stud poker.

The name stud poker is seen to be attributed to the many cowboys who played the game frequently and this can be seen in the early records of the game being cited as stud-horse poker. This game evolved into five card stud poker and was the most popular form of poker variation for many decades.

It was not until the early 1900s, when an unknown gambler introduced a variation to five card stud poker, known today as seven card stud. The rules were set and over the following years seven card stud overtook five card stud in the population stakes and soon became the most widely played poker variation in North America.

Unfortunately, for the admirers of seven card stud poker, the 1970s can be seen as the downfall period for the game. As had happened many years earlier with five card stud poker, a variation of seven card stud poker, known simply then as Hold Em, had arrived from Texas and was taking the world by storm. By the mid-1970s, almost all casinos in Las Vegas were choosing Hold Em over seven card stud poker and whilst it is still played by many avid fans today, seven card stud poker is not at the height of its popularity as it was during the early 20th century.

A popular casino game amongst amateurs and experienced players alike, roulette is a game of chance where players bet on the outcome of a spin of the roulette wheel.

Unlike many other casino games, roulette is one of the only casino games that amateurs and experienced professionals can play alongside each other with similar chances of winning. For example, if playing Texas Hold Em poker, an experienced or seasoned professional will almost always win against an amateur player.

They have the skills and knowledge of the game to be able to dominate it easily. However, with roulette, it is slightly different. New players to roulette may simply choose whether the ball on the roulette wheel is going to land on a red spot or a black spot.

Straightforward and easy to bet on, the stakes are not particularly high, but with a 50/50 chance of winning, most players will easily recoup any previous losses. However, more experienced players may take a more tactical approach to the roulette table, betting a Corner, Street or a Six Line, all specialist roulette bets that can increase a players chance of winning.

There are many people who say that if studied enough, the game of roulette can be beaten, this is simply untrue. In its most basic form, roulette is a game of chance. It is a game of luck and no skill is involved.

Most of these arguments are based around one theory, which is to take note of if the roulette ball lands on a red or black spot. A bet is placed on one colour constantly and doubled if that colour is not chosen on the spin.

Their argument extends to the fact that if the roulette ball was to land on red a certain number of times in a row, then the following time it has to be black.

Whilst it may appear to make sense in the first instance, when looking at it in more detail, it does not work.

Regardless of whether the roulette ball has landed on red for 100 spins, the 101st spin of the wheel still has an almost equal chance of landing on red or black (with the exception of landing on 0). This is because each spin should be considered completely individual from the last, which is the reason why almost all roulette techniques cannot be effectively put into practice.

Whilst trying to beat a roulette table is impossible, raising the games odds so that they are in the players favour is possible. Many people over time have sat down and created strategies that help to increase the odds of a game of roulette in their favour.

One of the more popular strategies is the 24/7 strategy, created by a newspaper editor in Los Angeles called Andres Martinez.

The basic idea behind the 24/7 strategy is to split a players playing budget into 35 separate but equal amounts. One number would then be chosen from the roulette wheel and bet on 35 times.

If the number came up, the player could continue playing with their winnings.

The downside to this is that this strategy only increases the players likelihood of winning to around 60%, leaving a 40% margin for loss, proving that regardless of how many methods and strategies are created, roulette will always be a pure game of chance.

In one way or another, most people around the globe are being affected by the recession, known more commonly as the credit crunch, which the world is currently experiencing. Everyone, regardless of whether they are multi-national company or a single person living alone, are tightening their belts to try and get through this difficult financial period in time.

So to some, understanding that poker has seen an increase in popularity recently, may come as a bit of a shock. To many people, poker is seen as simply throwing money away whilst playing cards - money which could be spent elsewhere. However, what many people don’t actually realise is that playing poker could actually ease the financial burdens that the recession is causing.

The first and foremost factor people have to understand is that it is only poker that money should be played and not casino games of any choice. The reason behind this is that regardless of what non-players will say, poker is almost primarily a game of skill. This means that whilst some luck is involved - as with all sporting games - poker can be won be playing to a strategy. It may take some time to recoup any losses incurred at the start, or to make a large profit, especially with the temptation of playing outside of the strategy when one appears to be on a winning streak, but it is possible to predict, approximately, how much extra could be brought in by playing poker effectively.

A prime example of this is Peter Eastgate, the 2008 World Series of Poker winner. Playing poker predominantly online as a favourite past time, Peter Eastgate went, in a matter of months, from being an amateur, online poker player to the winner of the most prestigious event on the poker calendar. Taking home a gigantic amount of $9,152,416, any of Eastgate’s potential financial worries were set aside as he played rigidly to a poker strategy,

For many people completely new to the game, playing poker might seem somewhat adventurous, especially to those who have never played a card game in their life. However, the internet is packed full of websites that feature masses of free information on how to play this wonderful game. Self-teaching the basics, the next step is to move on to some ‘play-money’ tables online and see the results. Working to a set strategy (for example, folding on any cards that are lower than a certain value), any amateur player can soon be earning an additional, tax-free income by playing poker.

With a lot of spare time on people’s hands due to financial constraints and more and more casinos offering some fantastic incentives - most notably free money after a minimal deposit - people are learning to play poker at a faster rate than has been seen in many years. It may take a while to learn and become an effective poker player, but the world of online poker could be the shining light that is needed so much for many through this dark and depressing recession
