It is common knowledge in the world of gambling that poker can be played for free. Whether it is taking up the offer of a signup bonus, where the online casino will generally match a players first deposit, or simply playing in the free money area, where poker can be played with free or play money and cannot be withdrawn, most believe it is possible to play free poker. Although this may be true in the first sense, if it is looked at more indepth, can poker be really be played with no money spent at all?

The answer to the question really depends on how far down the money ladder one would like to go. For example, if playing poker from home on the internet, then there could be the cost of the computer to consider, as well as the internet and the electricity, whilst not forgetting any drinks or beverages that may be consumed whilst playing. However, these overheads can be disregarded if they are going to be purchased or used whether poker is being played or not.

This is the same with poker in an offline casino. There is the cost of travel from home to the casino, as well as any drinks and snacks that are paid for in the casino and the cost of travel to return home. Again however, if a visit to the casino was already going to happen, then these costs are not seen as additional when calculating the cost of free poker.

One of the easiest ways to play free poker is to use one of the signup bonuses that most online casinos and poker rooms offer. Whilst many people consider these bonuses to be completely free money, there are some restrictions with the bonuses and several points that need to be noted.

In general, to receive the money from a signup bonus, the player has to first deposit a minimum amount of money to be eligible for the free money from the casino. Furthermore, there is set criteria surrounding this money, most notably and regularly the fact that is has to be gambled either a set amount of times or to a certain value. Once these criteria have been met, then the money, should any remain, can be withdrawn.

With this view, it is not possible to play poker for free, money has to be deposited and then gambled before it can be withdrawn. This, for many, would result in a loss. However, for several people, if a set strategy is played to, then a positive outcome is possible. For example, imagine a new player had deposited 100 pound and received 100 pound in free money. Rather than them playing a game of high stakes Texas Hold Em poker where there is stiff competition, they would be much better playing a less popular poker game at first, where the stakes were lower but the competition lower too, until they have reached the criteria set. They can then withdraw their initial deposit and play their chosen game with free money, the winnings from playing with the initial money given as a signup bonus.

It may take some time and it may not be to everyones tastes, but it is possible, especially online, to play completely free poker.

Online poker is the biggest form of online gambling that currently takes place and it has been since the late 1990s. With the massive online casino boom that began before the millennium, poker blossomed from a game that was played in many different variations in casinos around the world into a multimillion pound industry.

Whilst online poker does now dominate the whole poker scene, there is still an extremely healthy offline poker world.

The popularity of poker can be traced back to March 19 1931 when gambling was officially legalised in the state of Nevada. Initially, venues for playing some form of gambling games were built slowly and it was not until 1946 that dedicated casinos began to be built, when the Flamingo Hotel was opened and began offering an extensive range of gambling games. At the time, Bugsy Siegel, the owner of the Flamingo Hotel, did not realise where his hotel had been built. Over the next few years however, more hotels and casinos began to be erected nearby and soon, this area of Las Vegas was being known as the now famous Strip.

Prior to the legalisation of gambling, it was still possible to play poker and it was actually relatively easy to find a poker game, even though playing for money was illegal. Played in many bars around the country, usually playing Five Card Stud or Five Card Draw, the decade of the 1930s was the start of poker beginning to snowball into the most played card game around.

In the modern day Las Vegas, the Strip is packed full of different casinos offering every variation of poker imaginable. All within a short travelling distance of each other, it is possible to play Omaha Hi Low in the Mirage, then Seven Card Stud in the Bellagio, followed by Five Card Draw in New York New York and finishing with Razz in Caesars Palace.

Of course, not only is poker played in Las Vegas and general casinos around the world, but is it is a massively popular game to play at home.

If friends get together to play cards, almost instinctively the game is assumed to be some variation of poker. In addition, whilst Texas Hold Em may be the number one poker game to play online, it is matched with popularity with Five Card Draw when playing at home. Five Card Draw is very rarely seen in offline casinos, but is a much loved home game, generally due to the ease of playing, unlike Texas Hold Em, there are only two rounds of betting and no real way to read other players, as there are no community cards.

Whilst online poker may be the way forward for many, offline poker is still massively popular and dominates the casinos around the world. Furthermore, it cannot be forgotten that without offline poker, the worlds most famous poker tournament, the World Series of Poker, would not be taking place. The World Series of Poker now allows for players to gain entry to the tournament via online or satellite games, but the main event is still played solely offline, keeping the world of offline poker thriving.

The game of Texas Hold Em is the most popular form of poker played in the modern day. Over the years, the illustrious title of Best Poker Variation has awarded to games such as Five Card Stud and Seven Card Stud, but is now firmly seen as being held by Texas Hold Em.

One of the allures that this variation has is that it is not only a gambling game and requires, in general, equal measures of both luck and skill. Whilst this is often a positive point as it allows for a more in-depth card game, it can be extremely daunting for beginners to the game. To alleviate any worries that may be apparent with amateur Texas Hold Em players, there are several rules that should be followed.

Once a player has started the game and has had their hole cards dealt to them, the first point to consider is how good the cards are. Calculating how good hole cards are depends on how outgoing a player is. However, as a general rule of thumb, if hole cards are not a pair of 10s or above, then a fold should be considered. This does seem like a very conservative way to play poker and can seem boring at first, as it may take some time to receive two cards of 10s or above, but it is also a great way to learn the basics of Texas Hold Em and ensure that no money is lost carelessly.

Whilst this rule can be abided by for beginner players, there is some flexibility for players who have been playing for a while. The idea here is to split the players up into three separate categories, those who are straight after the dealer, early players, those who are after the early players, middle players and the final players, late players. Depending on where a player is sat depends on how they should proceed with betting.

If sat in the early players section, then the conservative betting above is a good rule to stick to. If in the middle players however, it is safe to call, not raise, hole cards that are a pair of 8s or above. Finally, if a player is in the late players section of the table, then it is acceptable to call with hole cards that contain any card coupled with an Ace, as well as any form of pairs.

Unfortunately, once the flop, the first three community cards, has been dealt, it is very difficult to provide any one strategy to stick to. Deciding whether or not to enter the game with the hole cards dealt is the single most important decision to make when playing Texas Hold Em, as it impacts on how the rest of the game is played. The most important point to consider if deciding to enter a game after being dealt the hole cards is to not be worried to bow out of the game at any stage. One of the main reasons why amateur poker players lose their money in the early hands of the game is that they have the thought that as they are now in the game, they may as well see it through to the end. There is no need to play with this mentality and each part of the game should be treated as an individual one, with the decision of whether or not to carry on or fold made at each available opportunity.

In one form or another, bingo can be dated back almost five centuries, when a game called Lo Giuoco del Lotto dItalia was played in Italy around 1530. However, in its current state, bingo is a comparatively new game, as it was not until 1929 when Edwin Lowe saw a game called beano being played at a carnival in Atlanta. Seeing how enthused the players were, he evolved the game into a saleable state and the name change, from beano to bingo, is said to be one of accident, as a player who won shouted bingo instead of beano.

o How popular is online bingo?

In a single word, massively. Since the decline of offline bingo during the 1990s, online bingo has seen a boom since the turn of the millennium and outside of the US alone, turnover for online bingo is estimated to be over one billion dollars.

In the UK, the figures are even more impressive. It was recently documented in a survey of leisure activities that online bingo was the most popular past time for females under the age of 25.

Regarding where to play online bingo, the choice is gigantic. There are hundreds of individual online bingo halls within the UK, a large amount of which have offline halls too, but the market is dominated by five companies, with market shares of 19 percent, 16 percent, 13 percent, 10 perecent and 7 perecent.

o Is offline bingo still played?

Although bingo halls are becoming defunct throughout Europe, several still exist in certain parts of the world. For example, Buenos Aires has seen a recent surge in offline bingo and it is extremely easy to find a bingo game, of any variation, anywhere in the area.

In addition, whilst online bingo in the UK is the fastest growing over anywhere else in the world, it is estimated that less than 5% of offline players actually play online.

Furthermore, bingo is still one of the primary games played at smaller events, such as church fairs or village fetes, as well as being massively popular in the casinos in the most famous gambling area in the world, Las Vegas.

o Which is better, online or offline bingo?

That is entirely an individual persons choice. It is without question that online bingo is now more popular and because of this reason, the prizes are regularly much greater than in games played offline. Furthermore, online bingo allows players to participate in several games at once, therefore increasing their chances of taking home a large amount of winnings quite considerably.

However, many believe it is difficult to beat the thrill that is apparent in brick and mortar bingo halls. The intensity that is apparent during a bingo game is seen as electric, especially when a line has already been called and only one or two numbers stand between players and the final jackpot amount.

Deciding on whether online or offline bingo is better is the players choice and their requirements should be taken into consideration before providing a definite choice.

Whilst there are many poker tournaments taking place around the world each and every day, the most popular poker tournament is the famed World Series of Poker. Starting in 1970 as a six person tournament, the World Series of Poker has grown into an event that has a prize money value of millions of dollars.

The very first of these tournaments was in 1970 took place in The Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas, where it was hosted for the following 34 years. Owned by Benny Binion, he invited six of the best and well known poker players in the country to play a variety of different poker games, with the winner, Johnny Moss, being the player with the greatest amount of chips left after all games had been complete.

One of the most prominent points about the World Series of Poker is the pinnacle to the tournament, the Texas Hold Em main event. Starting in 1971 with a buy in of 5,000 dollars, this grew to 10,000 dollars in 1972, a figure which it has stayed at ever since.

Somewhat surprisingly, the whole event was not a resounding overnight success and it took over a decade before the tournament attracted even a mere 52 participants in the whole series. Growing in entrants year on year, the prize money also grew substantially. From 1971, there was no known prize money in the first tournament back in 1970, when the prize money was 30,000 dollars, it had increased considerably two decades later and stood at a magnanimous 1,000,000 dollars. Considering the amount of entrants that were in the final main table competition, the odds of winning were fantastic, assuming experience and professionalism were at the forefront of any players game.

Since 1973, this worldwide famous poker tournament has had unprecedented media and television coverage, which has become of a better quality and more in depth each and every year. When the 1973 tournament was being covered on television, it featured little more than an overview of the tables. However, the 1980s and 1990s saw a rise in the quality, with player interviews being introduced and hints and tips offered to the viewers along the way.

Although now considered a given, 2002 brought the introduction of the much loved card camera. Located under each players area of the table, the card camera offers views of each players cards when they place them face down in the marked area. This was a great addition the World Series of Poker coverage as finally viewers could see what cards each player had been dealt and the strategies they were playing, without having to wait until all bets had been taken. Furthermore, the card camera is often underrated as many young professional poker players have cited one of their main learning styles as being the card camera, as it allowed them to make notes of how other professional players were handling the cards they were given and the betting strategies they were implementing.

A fantastic poker tournament, this famed and much loved poker tournament is a tournament that anyone can enter and win, assuming that they are good enough at the game, which has been seen in recent years, with one example being an amateur poker player with only 2 years playing experience winning at the final table.
