I often wonder if it’s a positive thing but I usually get consulted on any gambling question from my circle of friends. The discussion last weekend was the assertion on what was the best casino game - online roulette was the suggestion. Well I’m sorry but I have to disagree - anyone who knows me will not be surprised that roulette is by far my favourite game in any form of gambling. But I’m afraid the comparison of being in a posh casino with chandeliers, cute little waitresses and the totally unfounded feeling of being James Bond briefly, simply doesn’t compare with coming home from the bar and playing online roulette in my underwear.
First of all I had to lay down a few rules for my friends when searching for an online gambling game to play, with roulette - never, ever play on an American wheel. This roulette wheel has two zeros which roughly doubles the house edge (the advantage the house has over you) it’s bad enough when you’re stuck in a casino surrounded by American roulette wheels but online you have a choice, vote with your mouse and click away from them.
My second and very important rule to playing online roulette in a casino is don’t play when you have had too much to drink. With these days of easy credit and plastic money it’s all too easy to get carried away if you’re not thinking straight. You can drunk in a bar and make a fool of yourself but get drunk when gambling and you can do some much more lasting damage to your financial situation. Seriously it’s true, don’t drink too much if you are gambling online in any form.
My third point is also related to money, gambling should be fun - sometimes you will win and sometimes you will lose but it should always be moderated. Have a set target for winnings and losing, when you trigger either stop playing you’ll either have a nice little windfall to spend or you’ll have limited your losses. If you carry on for hour after hour gambling in an online casino there can only be one result and that’s you losing - remember the house edge it will always get you in the end.
Anyway I quickly tired of most of the online games, they all are like computer simulations of blackjack, poker and roulette and frankly I could never get away from the feeling that my computer opponent has something of an advantage. So my choice of best Casino game is online roulette but a very special version of roulette.
It’s an online casino but it’s a real time game set in a casino in Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin. You play a real game in a real casino alongside all the other punters. Live Casino

There are lots of people who will offer to teach you a winning roulette system - usually for a large fee. Why they would need the money is anyone’s guess especially when their systems cannot fail. When you enter a casino there is one game there that is almost certainly governed entirely by chance and probability and that is the game of Roulette. Roulette has a colourful history - the name is derived from the French for ’small wheel’. It is thought the game was invented by Blaise Pascal in the 17th century - as a perpetual motion machine. Having watched a wheel seemingly spin forever when I place a large wager then I sometimes wonder if he wasn’t far off succeeding!
The first casino was set up by the Blanc brothers in Monte Carlo and it is said that the brothers sold their souls to Satan for the secret of Roulette. The mystical and devilish side of the game of Roulette is not helped by the adding up all the numbers on a roulette wheel which eerily total the number of 666 - supposedly the number of the beast. As you can imagine this has created a very supernatural aura around the game of roulette. This of course hasn’t stopped people searching for a winning roulette system over the centuries with or without the help of satanic help.
The simple fact is that your best friend in searching for a winning system is in mathematics and the laws of probability. The single most important point to remember in paying roulette is that the house always has an ‘edge’ that is a mathematical advantage against the individual gambler. If you’re looking for a winning roulette system what you must do is minimize that edge and the first important decision is the choice of wheel. There are two main wheels in the world of roulette usually known as European and American - the main difference is that the American wheel has an extra 0 - this doesn’t sound much but effectively more than doubles the advantage of the house. The house has a 2.7 % edge on a European wheel and a huge 5.6 % advantage using an American wheel.
If you have any choice always play the European wheel as you have a much better chance of winning. The most effective strategy in roulette is to decide a limit or a goal - Roulette is primarily a game of chance so you can be lucky and win - however the longer you keep gambling the more likely the house edge will take affect. Set a target to win or lose and when either of these happen leave the tables - that will either protect your winnings or minimise your losses. But most of all enjoy roulette is is a great way to spend an evening. Online Roulette is not quite the same as the traditional game - there is no 100% guarantee of a completely random table as the entire experience is created by a computer which fundamentally has a problem creating random numbers. For instance be very wary of a casino where it seems almost impossible to lose on the beginners (free) tables.
Some people say there are distinct patterns and flaws in the random number generator that some of these online roulette tables run on and you can predict likely winning outside bets. This program claims to exploit this weakness - Roulette Killer

Many of us true gamblers would just love to find a guaranteed roulette winning strategy and there are lots claiming this all over the internet. Usually they’ll come in extremely expensive documents or reports but just as likely found free on a simple web page leading to a casino site. In my experience these are so-called secret strategies are usually based on the Martingale system.
The Martingale system was first used by French and German gamblers in the eighteenth century so by now there are many, many variances. The absolute simplest version though I’m sure you will have come across before. The idea is best explained by analysing a simple toss of the coin - you bet on heads initially and if you lose you continue to back ‘heads’ but double your stake each time. This in theory would eventually lead to a win and a recover of all the previous stakes. In practice it usually leads to very large losses as the stake exponentially rises.
The Martingale system is actually extremely loosely based on a mathematical assumption called the “Gamblers Fallacy” which basically concludes that past events can affect future results. Or in to explain in English if heads has come up 10 times in a row - the next toss is more likely to come up tails - this I’m afraid is not true as the previous ten results have no bearing on the next toss at all. Even if the ball on a casino wheel landed in red 25 times consequently - the odds are still 50/50 (minus the 0 or house edge) on the next spin.
Even if you actually believe in the martingale system or some of it’s strange variants - it would be difficult to apply nowadays as even if you could afford it most casinos have limits on each bet which would prevent it. Most casinos have never actively deterred using Martingale though simply because they don’t lose by it. Each roulette winning strategy should be studied in the cold light of statistics before you spend any money on it.
Of course statistics can only really be applied to the above situations where an event is truly random - the spin of a roulette wheel has so many outside factors affecting it that it extremely close to being completely random. An online roulette wheel is a different matter though as the spin is controlled by a computer.
Computers have always had a problem generating random numbers purely because they are programmed and so are always following deterministic code. All online casinos are run via computer algorithms and therefore are only as random as the underlying software.

If you started looking for a roulette betting strategy maybe on the internet - I guarantee you would find a certain one. It might be given a different name or have some slight variation on the original - but it would highly likely be based on the martingale system.
This super, secret, guaranteed winning strategy has been around for a couple of centuries and I doubt anyone has become rich from it yet.
The system sounds fairly plausible - you bet on an even odds result (say red/black or odd/even) then if you lose you repeat the bet double your original stake. The idea is that if you keep doing this then you eventually make a profit. There are quite a few problems with this system even though the idea sounds like it might work.
There are no truly 50/50 bets in a casino - there is always a slight house edge. If you are unable to double your stake at any point the system fails
The system is taking the risk of a very large loss in exchange for lots of little gains
If you reach the house limit - the system breaks down
Your stake requirements can get very large if you lose a few times in a row. There are variants on the system - where you don’t start betting until you’ve seen certain combinations occurs e.g. wait for three reds in a row and then start using martingale buy betting on black.
The main statistical problem with all of them is they are presuming that after a sequence of certain events - the opposite event is more likely. This is not true as passed events have no bearing on the next spin of the wheel - you can roll red 15 times in a row but it’s still 50/50 (excluding 0) the next spin - this is usually ignored in the average roulette betting strategy. This statistical truth means that long sequences actually occur more often that you expect - the Martingale player could easily be faced with the situation of having to place bets of several thousand dollars to recoup a $1 profit!
Although I prefer the atmosphere of a real life casino and roulette table - online roulette is becoming increasingly problem. The major difference is that the wheels spins are not controlled by random chance but by a computer attempting to simulate this.
Casino killer is a program designed to predict patterns and winning bets in online roulette - it only works with outside bets (i.e. it doesn’t predict single numbers only combinations). It’s worth checking out but remember it can’t be used as a roulette betting strategy with real casinos as the spin is completely random there.

Just the name roulette even has a risque sound to it - and you’d be right in thinking that the origins of roulette are steeped in diabolical intent. It is commonly agreed that the first roulette wheel was invented in 1655 - by Blaise Pascal - a brilliant mathematician.
It is said that it was created during experiments to attempt to create a perpetual motion machine something which we now know to be impossible. It is fairly unlikely that Monsieur Pascal really intended to invent one of the worlds most famous gambling games. Interestingly enough a brilliant mathematician such as him would probably be amused at some of the ludicrous schemes and strategies that have been devised to win at his ‘game’.
The simple fact is that real life roulette is just about as random as you can get, there are stories of biases appearing in certain wheels but nowadays casinos keep their roulette wheels extremely well maintained. The idea of any bias in a croupiers throw or his stance at the wheel is extremely unlikely in my opinion.
But alas there are still strategies that can be found on “how to make a killing in Vegas” type websites all over the internet which are mostly made up - you would fare better looking at probability case studies at universities and colleges. Most of the systems are strategies based on the Martingale system which requires you to keep doubling your bet until you win there are numerous drawbacks with this so-called secret system but the main issue is you are risking lots of very small wins against a huge loss which will inevitably turn up.
Anyway if you want some handy tips on playing roulette
- always play on a European Table the odds are way better
- always have a goal
- if you win or lose ‘x’ amount - walk away
- don’t drink too much when gambling
- winning streaks can turn into losing streaks very quickly
- Have fun don’t let gambling run your life
If you end up playing roulette - remember always try to minimise the house edge - if you have any choice play at a European table - it has one less ‘0′ which makes a significant difference. The American tables have an extra zero which makes it one of the most heavily weighted games (against you) in the casino. Only play American tables for fun don’t expect to win unless you are incredibly lucky.
But mainly playing roulette in real life is there for fun - there is no truth to the rumour that the Blanc brothers sold their souls for the secrets of roulette before opening their first casino. My Christian buddy has also kindly pointed out that if you add up all the numbers on a roulette wheel - you get the number 666 - the number of the beast apparently. Well I’m going to risk it because roulette is great fun !
I play roulette online with an aim to win - the atmosphere is never going to be the same but the advantage is that the wheel is computer controlled and computer programs can be hopeless at generating random numbers.
