Ok, so you consider yourself to be the quintessential United States person living a pretty normal life and pretty much average to above average in most aspects. Am I right in that statement?

If I am, and I KNOW I am, then you are some one that either thinks that gambling and betting on the horses is fun, or if you have never done it, you would go crazy once you do get a chance to partake in the fun of betting on the ponies.

How do I know that? Well, if it was merely a past time that people did, it would not have lasted and proliferated into the industry that it is today. There would not be racetracks and Off Track Betting establishments commonly called OTBs almost everywhere you turn these days. They are making money and getting built some how. Lets face it that is a simple case of supply accommodating the demand. There is a huge demand and so companies do what they can to supply the means by which you can enjoy a period of time betting. Lets face it here; it is a two way tug of war. You want to go in, make a bet and walk out with a LOT more money than you walked in with and the establishment wants to help part you from as much of your hard earned cash as they can. That is part of the over all excitement. Its like walking down the street and finding money on the curb and no one around. Or reaching into an old suit you have not worn in years, since that last boring family wedding, and finding a twenty in there. Its the excitement of or the illusion of getting something for nothing.

Its like doing something as a child that you knew you were not supposed to do but you do it and hope you get away with it because it gets the adrenaline going and makes you feel alive.

Betting on the horses is fun and really gets you going. Unlike other forms of gambling and betting when you implement another element or two into the equation. Say a horse that might not feel great that day, or a jockey that maybe had one hot dog too many the night before and could slow down the horse because of the added weight. You take time to study things before you place that bet on a horse and as such you are trying to swing the odds into your favor because you have developed a formula, whatever that might be, to help you determine which horse is going to make it to the number one spot.

Unlike the famed one armed bandits in a casino on the strip in Vegas or nestled on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. This takes a certain amount of skill. Lets face it, anyone can pull that lever and hope for a winner.

It takes some real work to analyze the information on the sheet and compute all the variables that may go against or for a certain choice and then to lay down the money on that choice and then scream as they run around the track.

Yep, betting on horses IS fun.

Gambling is gambling. You take a little (or a lot) of your money and invest it in the hopes of making a profit, much like your own small business venture in a way.

There is, however a huge difference between betting on the horses and betting in a casino.

When you are at a racetrack you look over the statistics, you look over the horse and the jockey and the previous win, place and show. Ages of the ponies weights, the competition and the same data about them. You will take that information and assess the data and come up with the horse that, in your humble opinion, will cross the finish line first. So you have to do a little work to make that bet. Of course, you could just pick a name that sounds nice and go that way and hope for the best. But your odds of winning that way are low and it just takes away a lot from the over all experience of running the ponies.

When you walk into a Casino, you obviously have many more choices on how you are going to spend that hard earned money. You can choose Keno, Craps, Poker, Black Jack, the slot machines or any of a myriad of other games that are designed to part you from your money.

If you talk to a real gambler on any of those games, they will tell you it takes real skill to make yourself a winner at them. Counting cards, watching the other player and the dealers faces when it comes to the cards. The special way you roll the dice and yell at them to get them to give you the numbers you need. Watching the one armed bandits and knowing when they are going to pay off in the mother load by using all sorts of mathematical equations.

But as far as I am concerned, the Casino is just more a matter of luck than the horse betting. Yes, you need to know what you are doing in either one so you do not make costly mistakes. Yes, there is a certain amount of skill involved in both of them and yes, they are both exciting.

But one of the biggest things that attract me more to the horses is the fact that I get to be outside and enjoying the day at the track instead of inside some noisy casino full of whistles and bells and artificial lighting. I am a sunshine kind of person and enjoy the feel of the sun on my face and the wind in my hair and the smell of the track.

Everyone is different and we all have our opinions. Bottom line for me is that I find I get a better return on my investment at the track and if I win or lose it is mostly up to me and my skill level and how well I do my homework more than in the casino where lady luck is the one in control for the most part and a good portion of the outcome is out of my control.

It has been said that horse racing is one of the most attended spectator based sports the world over. A lot of that no doubt has to do with the mystique associated with gambling.

The most popular forms of horse racing are Harness Racing and Thoroughbred Racing. Both of them are popular with the fans of the sport and many folks find themselves engrossed in more than one form of the sport because while they are similar, they are vastly different and I will attempt to explain those differences to you here so you can have a working knowledge and understanding of them.

If you have ever watched Ben Hur, then you have an idea of how long this sport has been around. It has evolved as a descendant of those chariot races of Roman times. Today there is still a two wheeled vehicle being pulled by a horse What makes this form of horse racing different is that the horses all run in the same gait and as such, the way to win has to be thought out and strategize by the person riding in the Chariot, as it were.

Ok, you are lost. What is a gait you asked? And rather than sending you to Google to find the answer, her it is.

Gaiting has to do with how the horse moves its legs when running. He can run in either Pacing or Trotting. In Pacing, the horse has its right front and back hooves hit the ground at the same time. This generally results in a faster and more exciting race. But the horses tend to break into a trot and when they do the handler has to settle them back into a pace. The other form of this is Trotting. In this type of race the legs diagonally opposed hit the ground at the same time. To put that in English, the right front hoof and the left rear hoof are in contact with the track at the same time.

Thoroughbred racing is more what the general public is accustomed too, like the Kentucky Derby. This is the race where fortunes can be won, or lost. It is generally consider by most to be the sport for kings and is the one that generates the most excitement and media attention. It is the one that most people think of when you mention horse racing.

Not to be satisfied with just throwing a bunch of horses on a track to go head to head, attempting to keep the horses somewhat matched in skill so that the attendees will spend more money further narrows the field. Lets face it a race where one horse was a sure winner would be a lot less exciting and generate a lot less betting money than one where any of the ponies could conceivably end as the winner.
Horse racing is a great spectator sport that can be enjoyed over and over again and a sport where you can legally (for the most part) make some serious money if you do your homework and are good at.

At first glance, I did not think that answering this question would require an enormous amount of thought or effort. I am a normal alpha male of the species. I bet on horses to win money. Well, that is what I thought until I looked at that statement and paused for a moment.

That certainly is part of the reason that I bet on the horses. But as I dug a little deeper inside myself I found that I also liked the feeling I got from picking the winner out of a large field of horses. Finding the winner that not everyone at the track found. Yeah, that is a little ego stoker there, but it feels good so we can add feeling good to the reasons I bet.

Then there is the camaraderie of getting together with other like minded folks for some yelling and screaming at the track as we cheer on our horse. If they win then they are the greatest and if not, well, where is the glue factory? Yea, so there is another reason. To be part of the team, There is lots of horses in a race, so lots of teams and even though there is only one first place horse, the fact that I am there participating makes ME a winner.

Then there is just the over all excitement factor. Lets face it you can get a nice feeling watching your ball team play a game, heck you can even go back to reason number one and bet and make or lose some money on that ball team. But you are only betting there is no skill.

With horse racing you have to take time to analyze some date and make a decision based on that data and then bet. That means that if you win, you actually took an active part in that win and if you lose, well you can place the blame on you. Unless of course the horse goes lame or breaks a leg in the race, in which case you are back to the glue factory again.

Goodness, and this was supposed to be a simple explanation of why I bet on horses.

Next I decided that the actual trip there was something that I enjoy. Getting away from the old castle and making the journey afar to the track is like a little miniature adventure, which never ceases to bring out the little boy in me, and I actually look forward to the traffic getting there and parking. As opposed to dreading the traffic I face en route to my daily nine to five grind.

Then we can add on the actual thrill of just feeling the day and getting engulfed in the over all feeling that is the racetrack. The sights, the sounds, the smells and just the whole overall experience of being a part of something like that.

I guess when it comes right down to it I bet on the horses for the money but the dividends it pays me back in the feeling that I get from it far outweigh what I do in cash even if I win. But yeah, on a great day I get to enjoy all of this and come home with a tidy sum of money in my pocket as well.

So which is better, betting on horse racing or betting at poker? Thats the age-old question now is not it? They both have some good strong points for being the number one contender for your gambling dollar. Lets look them over

When it comes to horse racing, you need to look at the horse that you want to bet, his statistics and how well he has done over time, more particularly in the past few races. You need to look over the competition and see how they stack up. You need to examine the jockey riding your horse and what he has done. Is he the regular rider? Then you need to look over the weather conditions, the track conditions, wind, the odds the handicap and all that stuff and you need to look over all that data and decide how much of your hard earned money you are willing to risk on this horse coming across the finish line in the number one position.

Now poker, on the other hand, is more a people game. You have to be good at reading people and the gestures and movements and it also helps if you can keep a mental note of cards played and dealt so you can sort of figure out what the possibility is of you getting that Royal Flush or what ever hand you are trying to assemble at the moment.

Reading faces is relatively easy if you just take a few trial hands and watch how the people react. Unless you are facing a professional, everyone gives away little quirks when they get a good card or hand, or they bet a certain way based on what they hold and after a few hands you should be able to get a feel for what they may be holding by the way they gesture and or bet on the hand.

Counting the cards and keeping a thought as to what has also been played will also give you a bit of a mental outline of what is going on and what may be where and what you might expect to get in your next card.

But there is still a certain amount of luck involved in both betting on horses and poker, but I think more of lady luck comes in to play with cards. Lets face it, on the ponies once you know what the horse is capable of and has done, there is a strong possibility that unless he goes lame of breaks a leg that he is going to perform similarly on the race that you are betting on. With cards, all things being equal and if you have a somewhat honest dealer, you are left to the luck of how the cards fall in the shuffle.

So, for my money, horses will give you a better return on the investment dollars that you have and you should be able walk away with a nice lining of green in your pockets from a little bit of work.
