The lottery in the UK has been operating since 2004 and is one of the most popular gambling games in the UK. The lottery is presided over by the Camelot group. The Camelot group is an organisation that runs the national lottery. The franchise to the lottery is awarded every 8 years. The Camelot group were awarded the franchise in 2003 and subsequently set up the UK’s first national lottery in 2004.

The group was also awarded the franchise in 2001 which gave them rights to the lottery until 2009. The franchise is dispensed by the government body called The National Lottery Commission. There have been many critics of the decision to award the franchise to the Camelot group as the royal mail own 20% of Camelot and the Royal mail are owned by the government. As a result it was seen as a way of creating more revenue for the government and not a fair choice. The main opposition was Richard Branson’s the people’s lottery. There was an enormous amount of controversy surrounding the bid when the choice was made in 2000.

When The National Lottery Commission were judging the tenders for the lottery franchise in 2000 it was announced that none of the potential providers met the statutory requirements to run the lottery. The choice was between the Camelot group and the people’s lottery.

The commission then announced that the lottery would be run by the people’s lottery and it looked like they would take over from the Camelot group however the Camelot group took the matter to court and won the right to run the lottery. The process was deeply criticised by observers and as a result many of the people that were involved in the voting resigned their posts. Despite the controversy the national lottery remains one of the most popular gambling events in the UK.

The lottery has had steadily declining sales figures since its inception in 1994 and as a result in 2002 the Camelot group set about rebranding the games that it offers. A number of different types of lottery games were introduced alongside the main game and the main game was renamed lotto. The lotto game is the conventional version of the lottery in which six numbers are drawn from a pool of forty-nine. The game also includes an additional bonus ball that can offer additional benefits for the player. The player will initially pick 6 different numbers in the hope that these numbers will get pulled from the draw.

The prize fund for the lottery is shared with the winners dependant on the number of numbers that they get right. The winners that get 5 numbers and the bonus ball receive an additional win on top of what they would win. The winners that achieve all six balls share the total jackpot with one another. The chances of winning the lottery are said to be in the region of one in thirteen million, nine hundred and eighty-three thousand, eight hundred and sixteen. If the jackpot is not won the prize fund will roll over to the following week. This means that the prize fund will be added to the prize fund of the following week.

I always here people complaining about gambling and how wrong it is and why would you want to waste your money, then a week later I bump into them in a shop and they are buying a lottery ticket. I say what are you doing I thought gambling was wrong and they reply don’t be silly this is the lottery.

What the hell? Isn’t the lottery a form of gambling I think to myself? It defiantly is, I think people that do not accept this fact are just in denial. If you are giving money to buy something to win more it is classed as gambling, people spend hundreds of pounds a week to play the lottery most times winning nothing back or a very minimal amount, this is classed as obsessive gambling, do you think that the more tickets you buy the better the odds are of winning? I don’t think that’s the case if your going to get lucky with the lottery you can do it with one ticket not hundreds.

Other forms of gambling would include raffles and competitions, although they are not classed as major games people still become addicted to these and waste a lot of money. Let us just take a minute and look in the arcades area of theme parks and fairs. You put money in the machines to play to win tickets, at the end of your day you can then exchange your tickets for something behind the counter. On average people spend around 50 pounds playing these machines to win tickets, they then go to the counter to exchange it for a small teddy or a balloon which you can buy for 1 pound.

I think the reason why people don’t class the lottery, raffles and arcades as gambling is because its featured nationwide it is publicised on the TV so it has been accepted by the public, it is exactly the same with scratch cards I have seen people winning like a few pounds on a card and then going to spend all that winnings on more cards to end up being left with nothing. So I reckon if games such as poker, roulette and blackjack where made public at an international level they it would no longer be classed as a dangerous dark game but it will be enjoyed by the whole world who would then also end up playing sensibly without getting into debt worries.

In this day and age there are lots and lots of different ways to play poker, from just playing for fun, to playing for serious cash amounts in your local casino or online. There are a lot of differences when comparing the alternate versions of the games. I feel that you have to have a lot more self control when playing online, due to the fact that you will be using your credit card and it wont hit you how much you have actually spent until your bill comes through.

Also another thing about online poker is the fact that the game is so fast, in real life poker you have a chat a laugh and try to evaluate your components, you get time to think and plan your next move. Online poker is just you, in front of your screen playing the game so fast that you are unable to think clearly. So you just keep clicking at your mouse buying more credits and losing more money.

All in all I feel that if you keep your cool and you write down a plan of how much you are going to spend, online poker can become a very good money earner. The reason for this is because if you just do not get too carried away and sit down and relax you can be in your prime. You will have no-one staring at you and making you nervous. You will also have the luxury of being at home with maybe a snack or drink.

There are a few tips to remember when going into a poker room either online or off. Without these tips you will be bound to fail. Firstly you should always remember that everyone plays poker differently, so don’t always think to yourself, this is what I would do otherwise you will lose. You must think out of the box. Never start counting how much money you have won otherwise you will start thinking that you are on a winning streak and will probably lose out if you continue playing.

When you are playing poker always stay silent, there is a reason that we get told to be silent in exams and it’s not just for the cheating, it is because you can concentrate much more when your surroundings are quiet. Finally the most important aspect to remember is know when to quit, whether you are losing or winning do not try to please your ego. You should have your money laid out from the start once that has gone just walk away.
