Poker has existed in some form or another for many years. People have enjoyed a cheeky gamble around camp fires, in pubs and basically wherever there is a deck of cards, some chips and a table. Despite unstable financial times and potential looming recession, poker seems to have escaped unscathed, in fact the British are the number one gambling nation in Europe, wagering a whopping average 17 billion GBP each year, clearly not a sign of Brits holding back, or the game of poker dying out.
A number of factors could explain the continuing growth of poker over the years. Currently Texas Hold Em is in fashion. Possibly due to the lucrative sweepstakes to be won, the exotic locations tournaments are held and the media exposure games acquire, add up to a winning formula for everyone. Celebrities are now also getting in on the action, mingling with poker pros on centre tables is certainly the new place to be seen.
Like all successful beings, poker evolves over time. There have been several variations that have flourished over time including; five card draw, seven card stud and now most prolifically Texas Hold Em, to mention just a couple. However there are many more variations, slight twists and differing rules usually found in small tournaments or just games played with friends. One particular example is Achilleios Hold Em, a quirky alternative of Texas Hold Em my friends and I created, in which one of two private cards dealt initially, must be shown. The game really becomes interesting when players decide which card to show, for example you can opt to show strength or weakness, depending on how you want to play, what your opponents are showing and what impression you want to portray.
New Technology also poses new variations and gaming styles. Despite a dealer-less table sounding like something out of a science fiction movie, it already exists in some casinos in Las Vegas, in fact is already proving very popular and is attracting large crowds, wanting to try it out. Players find they play very differently compared to sitting around a conventional table, with a large stack of chips in front of them, which can additionally act as a huge intimidator against less wealthy players. In my opinion this innovative, cost cutting approach will not be favoured by players in the long run and will be an interesting fad but never replace a human dealer.
In conclusion, the future of poker looks flush, although was never really in too much doubt. If the growth of players follows the growth of poker exposure, tournaments and winnings over the past few years, poker could become one of the most popular games played ever. Casual gaming is currently dominating the electronic games industry, which could furthermore help take poker into a new e-dimension. There are huge possibilities for online, portable, mobile poker tournaments that players can join in anywhere in the world, using the latest generation mobile phones and portable computers.

The Texas Holdem game begins with the dealer shuffling a standard deck of 52 cards. In online casinos, however, the dealer does not play. Instead, a dealer button, which moves clockwise from player to player with each hand, indicates which player would be the dealer if the deal were advanced from player to player as the game progresses.
Now, two players to the immediate left of the dealer put a predefined amount of money in the pot before the cards are dealt so that there will be something to game for in the subsequent hands. These bets are called the blind. Usually, the first player to the immediate left of the dealer posts a blind called the first blind - that is equal to half the minimum bet amount. The second blind, posted by the second player to the left of the dealer (if he indeed posts the bet) will be the full minimum bet amount.
After the blinds are posted, two down cards are dealt to the players, and the betting begins. A round of betting starts from the player to the left of the one who had posted the blind. The other players can call/raise/fold when it is their turn to bet. Once the first round of betting is completed, the dealer drops the top card from the deck in order to pre-empt the possibility that someone might have sneaked a peek of it. The next three cards on the deck are then flipped face up on the table, called the flop.
After the flop, another betting round begins from the player to the left-hand side of the dealer. In this and all future betting rounds, other players can call, raise or fold when their respective turn comes. Next is fourth street during when the dealer issues one more community card the fourth community card - face up on the table. This is usually done after burning the card on top of the deck in order to prevent cheating. Fourth street is followed by a third betting round, starting from the player to the immediate left hand side of the dealer.
The dealer drops another card before placing the final and fifth community card on the table, face up. This face up card is named the fifth street or the river. Players can now use the seven cards available the five community cards and the two hole cards to form the best five card poker hand. The last round of Texas Holdem betting starts from the player to the left side of the dealer, as earlier. After the betting, players who are still in the game reveal their hands, in what is called the show down. The one who had made the initial bet or the one who had made the final raise reveals his hand first. As the other players also reveal their hands in turn, the one with the best hand is adjudged the winner.
In the showdown, if the best five-card hand is formed using all the community cards, and does not include any hole cards, the player would only get a share of the pot. On the other hand, if two or more players have the equal hand, as per the poker rules, then the pot is split between them. As another possibility, if two players have the best five-card hand, formed with the help of less than five cards, the Texas Holdem poker rules insist that the winner be decided on the basis of kicker (the cards that are not part of the winning combination).

Now that major poker tournaments are being held in Germany due to the popularity of the game, it is important for German players to benefit from tips from professionals to help them win their game. Even though many people have enjoyed the game for hundreds of years, it has exploded all over the Europe with thousands of people playing online. Whether you play at home, in the casino or online, you need to know the difference in how to play a successful game and how to play a successful tournament. In a tournament, you need to win all of the chips to be the winner. If you don’t make a bet and take a risk, you will lose your chips in paying out the blinds when you turn comes around.
You do need luck on your side no matter how much skill and experience you have. Although the televised games shown in German TV give the appearance that all the players make a lot of money, the truth is that only a small number of players actually make a living from playing in tournaments.
There is a difference between ring games and tournament games. In a ring game, a German player must collect the maximum amount of chips. In a tournament game, the same player must collect ALL of the chips within a specific timeframe and with constantly increasing blinds. This means you have to win more hands and win the chips much faster in a tournament.
The Gap Concept is one that many players in Europe are now applying to their game. This means you have to remember that you need a better hand than the person who has placed the blind than what you would need to open the betting yourself. You do need to have a really good hand to call a bet, but a fair hand would be all right for placing a bet. You do have to follow the blinds in playing the game. At the beginning you can play tight and wait for other players to make mistakes. However, as the blinds start to rise, you will need to take chances and make bets.
Don’t worry about how many German players are left at other tables. Focus your attention on the table at which you are playing. Your goal is to become the chip leader and to maintain that position until the end. There will be times when you will lose your lead, but you can bring it back up with just one good hand. Learning to read your opponents is an important skill because through observation you will learn whether or not they have a good hand. You will also be able to get an idea of how they play and this can help you outplay them when you know you have the best hand.
A good player doesn’t stick to the same plan all the time. He/She can change strategies in the middle of the game when the time is right. Position, the action of the blinds and reading other players are strategies that will help you succeed in tournaments.

Through movies and television programs where the characters engage in playing poker and through televised poker games, poker has soared in popularity in Germany as in other European countries. Added to this is the technology that has inspired online poker so that players can sit at home and engage in what has now become known as a sport, but it doesn’t involve any physical activity. Poker rules are simple to learn from the simple draw games to Texas Hold’Em. Omaha poker is a little more complicated but it is a fascinating game. And best of all you don’t have to play with real money if you don’t want to when you play online.
Both Texas Hold’Em and Omaha are identical in the procedure in which the games are played. The rules of these games are the same for both German and US players.
The two players to the left of the dealer put the big and small blinds into the pot to start the game. These are the only players with money in the pot before any cards are dealt. The dealer gives each of the players two cards face down. In Omaha, the players receive four cards. The player sitting next to the player that placed the big blind starts the betting when he/she looks at the cards. If this player decides that the cards are no good, he/she will throw them away and not place a bid. Then each player in turn will either bid or fold.
Once this round is complete, and there are players who have bet, the dealer throws away (burns) the top card on the deck and then places three cards face up in the middle of the table. These are the cards the players can use to match with what they have in their hand to make a poker hand. Then another round of betting ensues, after which the dealer lays another card face up. This is called the flop. After this there is another bet and then another card called the turn. The final round of betting ends with the River card and when the players show what cards they hold in their hands a winner is declared. At any time in this process, a player can decide to fold and not take a chance on losing nay more money.
The difference in the two games of poker is in Omaha high low poker. This is a split pot game in which the player with the best high hand wins half the pot and the player with the best low hand wins half the pot. If there is no qualifying low hand then the player with the best high hand takes all the pot.
Making a high hand is the same as in regular Omaha with the hands starting at the top with a Royal flush and working down through the ranks to the lowest poker hand of one pair. The player can only use two of the cards in his/her hand to combine with the community cards to form a high poker hand and the remaining two cards to use to form a low poker hand. The difference is that in order for the cards to qualify as a low hand, they must all be eight or less.
