It is not known exactly how or when lotteries began but we do know that it was a very long time ago as there are refernces in the bible - Moses used a lottery to award land west of the River Jordan. In 1567 in England,Queen Elizabeth I established the first English state lottery. Amongst the prizes were cash, plates, and tapestry and 400,000 tickets offered for sale. Whilst in Ammerica Benjamin Franklin used lotteries to finance cannons for the Revolutionary War and John Hancock organised a lottery to rebuild the historic Faneuil Hall in Boston.

After the internet started to become popular VWD E-lottery was founded in 2002 - the brainchild of Tom Brodie and Len Fitzgerald who had known each other some 8 years prior to setting up the business. Tom had had a successful career in Sales and Marketing spanning 12 years but when in 1995 he was introduced to The Internet, his life changed. Len had spent twenty years running a successful business in the video industry and is credited with opening one of the first ever video rental stores in the UK in 1980.

It occurred to them that just about everyone on Earth would love to win a lottery jackpot but only a few very lucky people actually do. So they deliberated and thought that it would be a good idea if rather than just a couple of people winning multi million pound jackpots there was a way that numerous people, all willing to share a big jackpot, could greatly improve their chances.

After a good deal of research they were able to come up with lottery syndicates that stacked the odds of winning much more in favor of the players. Lottery syndicates were not, of course, a new idea but they could be made much more sophisticated with the help of computers and The Internet. And so the multiple-prize-winning system was born.

The UK National Lottery is one of the biggest, lump-sum, tax-free lotteries in the world. It is played twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the draw can be watched on National Television.

Players join E-Lottery online and members get allocated a place in a 49-player UK syndicate. They then get an email containing their virtual E-Lottery Membership Card which details the syndicate’s 5 lottery numbers, picked from 1 to 49, which are then entered automatically in to the draw every Wednesday and Saturday. There are only 5 main numbers because those 5 numbers are combined with every other remaining number to produce 44 different lines. This way each syndicate is always guaranteed to match at least one number. This dramatically increases your chances of winning the jackpot from 1 in 14 million to 1 in 1.9 million which is a 702% increase. And your odds of winning a smaller prize increase to only 1 in 13.

After each draw the numbers are automatically checked and any winning are sent directly to the players. So no more having to fill out tickets or kicking yourself if you forget to even buy a ticket. It’s all done for you from the comfort of your own armchair.

For decades bingo has been used by the Catholic Church as a fundraising tool for the various charities the church engages in. In fact if you mention bingo most people immediately think of Friday and Saturday nights in a smoky church basement or recreation hall. As a fundraising tool bingo has been wildly successful for the church and continues to be a mainstay of their fundraising efforts. Bingo enables local parishes to keep tuition at parochial schools affordable, funds building maintenance and improvements, and supports missionary work worldwide. The revenue generated by bingo games has enabled churches, veterans, and charitable organizations to engage in works for the common good.

In the past decade the Gay community has embraced bingo with a vengeance and flamboyance that brings new life to the game. Almost all the major cities in the US have one or several Gay themed bingo games and seats at some of these games are as sought after as front row seats at a new Broadway production and are just as hard to get. These games have raised millions for AIDS research and other charities.

What is probably the most popular bingo game in the United States takes place in Los Angeles at the popular bar and restaurant Hamburger Mary’s. Since 1998 Legendary Bingo has been raising money for various charities and the arts and it has been estimated that over 1.5 million dollars have gone to charities ranging from AIDS research to Habitat for Humanity. The games were first held at a local gourmet coffee shop and moved to their present venue at Hamburger Mary’s.

Within a short time celebrities began showing up at these wildly popular games and the tradition of celebrity bingo callers began. The list is quite impressive and past callers have included, Ed Asner, Linda Blair, Ruth Buzzi, Courteney Cox, Daryl Hannah, Perez Hilton, Lisa Kudrow, Rod McKuen, Tori Spelling, and others too numerous to mention. Games are held regularly in West Hollywood, Palm Springs, and Newport Beach. Legendary Bingo is easily one of the hottest events in the Los Angeles area and started a trend that has spread across the US. Like they say on their website “This is not your grandmother’s bingo”, outrageous games, outlandish people and LOTS of fun!

In Philadelphia Gay bingo is immensely popular and has a colorful history. Games are held at the Gershmen Y in Center City and each game has a unique theme. Examples include, Glamour Goth, Bitchy Bridesmaids, Rocky Horror, and Madonna Madness to name just a few. Monthly games are hosted by the Philadelphia AIDS Fund and all the money is used to fund AIDS awareness programs and prevention and care services for those living with AIDS. Over the years the Philadelphia AIDS Fund has raised the impressive sum of 12.6 million dollars through gay bingo and a wide variety of other fundraisers.

In San Francisco the aptly named Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence sponsor bingo games that attract both the gay and straight communities. The sisters are well known in the San Francisco area for their unique fundraising events. These events have not been without controversy. In 2006 the sisters were booted from the Most Holy Redeemer church because of complaints from the church’s congregation. Several charitable organizations were forced to temporarily cut back some services funded by the bingo games. Since then the sisters have found a new facility and things are running smoothly again.

Bingo is clearly one of the most effective fundraising devices for the gay community. The amount of revenue that has been generated is astounding and clearly demonstrates the solidarity of the gay community. AIDS research and social services for the victims of this tragic disease have received desperately needed funds from gay bingo games nationwide. These games have, in a small way, brought the straight and gay communities closer together and have opened channels of communication between the two groups.

For over a quarter of a century now, gambling has dominated as an industry. More and more people do not just see this as a form of recreational activity but as a lucrative business opportunity as well.

Nowadays, there are almost 445 casinos in the United States and still growing more. No wonder why many business people are opting to start a gambling business of their own because it seems to be the in-thing today. And wherever trends come, business-minded people would surely dominate the scene.

However, like any businesses, operating a gambling business also entails careful management and makes use of strategic methods so as to increase the business’s money-earning potential.

Luck or Skill?

Most people say that operating a business needs dogged determination, skills in all aspects of the business, and luck.

Hence, it applies the same thing in gambling business. But where gambling mostly relies in the stroke of luck, gambling business owners should not do so. This is because operating a business, in whatever form, should not merely rely on luck but on one’s skills and determination.

Indeed, businesses also have the risk of losing or winning in the end, just like gambling. But nevertheless, it still needs the proper management and operative measures so as to have a successful gambling business.

Things to consider

Just like any kind of business, running a gambling business also entails money. A person can never continue running a gambling business if it no longer has money.

People should keep in mind that running a gambling business is not a “get-rich-quick” scheme. Therefore, things that will be employed should be in conformity with the law.

It also needs good planning. Of course, there is nothing in this world that will be successful if not with good planning. Planning keeps the business right on track. It gives the owner a special guide in order to make decisions properly.

Moreover, dogged determination is required. Surveys show that almost 65% of the businesses, which were not able to succeed, had instantly given up their businesses just because of some trials.

And lastly, good accounting skill is needed in order to run a gambling game. After all, gambling entails lots of money, so it is just proper to keep track of whatever comes in and out of the business.

The bottom line here is that running a gambling business, like any other business, is not an easy job. What’s more, it needs a good combination of everything so as to get the business going, whether it includes luck or not.

This year’s Grand National race is fast approaching and the short list of entries has just been announced. The race will be run, as always at the Aintree Race Course in Liverpool, England.

On Saturday the 5th of April an estimated 500 million people will tune in to watch the race from around the globe. The Grand National is one of the biggest sports betting events of the year and horse owners and trainers compete for the $1.5 million dollar prize (800,000 UK sterling).

The Grand National is the high point of the steeple chase season and the horses must navigate 30 fences and complete the four and a half mile circuit to be crowned champion, in such a difficult race it’s no wonder that half of the horses will not make it around the course.

Which leads to some very interesting betting opportunities for those brave enough to take a punt on this race? The 2007 Grand National winner Silver Birch came in at odds of 33/1, in this race the long shots really do have a chance.

Looking at Silver Birch last year it was surprising to find him priced so high with the bookmakers. Before the race he ticked every box of a potential Grand National winner, he was in the right age bracket, didn’t have too much weight to carry and possessed other qualities that made him stand out from the rest of the field.

Backing a Grand National winner is never easy, but you can rule out many of the horses in the race by following some simple tips. The horses that remain should be considered as good each way bets. Below you will find our top five tips for selected a Grand National winner.

Tip 1… The National is a grueling race and horses that carry top weight struggle to make the trip, in the last fifty years only Red Rum and Corbiere have won carrying big weight, so look for a horse carrying no more than 11st 3lbs.

Tip 2… Look for horses from Ireland, the last six National winners have all made the trip across the Irish Sea to victory!

Tip 3… Just as Irish horses perform well in the Grand National, French horses perform very badly! Only one winner in the last hundred year, so you can forget those runners instantly.

Tip 4… The age of a horse running in the Grand National is very important, young horses just don’t have the experience to cope in a field this big - So don’t go for a horse younger than 9 or older than 12.

Tip 5… Do not go anywhere near a high street bookmakers on Grand National day! Unless you love standing in line for hours. High street bookies are swamped from early morning until the start of the race. Bet online with bookmaker like ToteSport, it’s safe, secure and you also get a free bet when you join.

It’s interesting to point out that most professional gamblers wouldn’t dream of placing a bet on the Grand National, for the very reasons that most of us love too, it’s too unpredictable!

Paul Edison invites you to check out his tips for this years Grand National race at www.grand-national.me.uk
